D&B Community Center and Social Housing

B&R Development | Stabroek

The Ontmoetingscentrum Schoem in Stabroek weaves social cohesion and architectural clarity into a single, layered ensemble. Conceived as a public plinth in the landscape, it anchors a new civic heart between village and polder. Two clustered volumes—one socio-cultural, one service-oriented—form an accessible ground level that merges with the green park flank of the Schoem-wijk. Above, thirty-six social dwellings articulate a humane density, their galleries conceived as communal streets, fostering interaction and social control. The material palette—white pressed brick, soft rose masonry, and restrained interiors—echoes the dignity of the old town hall while connecting with the new housing to the south. Flexibility, compactness, and collective value define both structure and program: a rational, adaptable infrastructure that invites polyvalent use. The architecture, understated yet resonant, aspires to be a silent framework for encounter—a building that whispers calm but encourages conviviality, embodying the continuum between care, community, and daily life.
