Housing Development Komet Phase 02

Revive | Mechelen

Commissioned by Revive, we are working on the second phase of the redevelopment of the former Comet factory into a car-free, sustainable residential district between the canal and the city ring, within walking distance of Mechelen’s historic center. Seven residential buildings are carefully arranged around a private yet permeable courtyard, creating an urban ensemble that balances openness and intimacy, collectivity and privacy. The compact configuration of volumes allows for a doubling of the neighbourhood park, which will be handed over to the city, reinforcing the integration of the district into the urban fabric. In close dialogue with BRUT, a shared material and detailing palette is developed, with subtle variations in brick tones, joints, and concrete finishes forming a family of related buildings, each with its own accent. Below ground, a parking facility connects to phase one. Sustainable mobility solutions, cohousing, ground-floor practice dwellings, community functions, and a public roof garden interweave different uses. In total, 144 housing units are being built, including 32 within a cohousing project, resulting in a layered and well-connected residential environment.
